Singapore Trip: Day 2

The previous day was a daunting experience. Most of the time we had to walk, and my girls complained about it. But you can't expect to have limousine service while you're doing a self-guided tour. We were exhausted, woke up at 11. Early bird catches the worm, forget about the Singapore breakfast tradition - Kaya toast with soft boiled eggs. You get this all the time in Malaysia, don't you?

In fact, I'd made extensive research for our trip, printed out the maps from maps.google.com (though you can get a free copy at airport, but that doesn't give you much info on walking around the city). You learn a lot this way, especially if you're going to study abroad soon. You get to rely on yourself, be an independent guy.

Our plan for the 2nd day is to spend the whole day at Sentosa. Alternatively you can do shopping @ VivoCity, the largest shopping mall in Singapore (slightly smaller than Pavilion; 3 times smaller than Mid Valley Megamall, oops.)

To get here, alight at the HarbourFront MRT Station, the current southernmost terminal station of North East Line. When the future Circle Line commences, HarbourFront will serve as a dual terminal station for 2 lines. The mall is adjoined to the MRT station, so it's easily accessible.

We had our brunch in Fig&Olive @ VivoCity. I know it's not somethin' special since you can find it in Sunway Pyramid, but their offer was irresistible. 1-for-1 lunch set promotion, limited to Gourmet Galore menu category, that means you pay for one set, and get another set free, how does that sound? I highly doubt you will be offered this in Malaysia. Once in a blue moon maybe.

4 sets for three of us. We were bloated! Any 2 sets with the highest price will only be billed. Our bill was S$41.20.

The mall has a sophisticated exterior design, that looks something like this...

This is the power generator room. Who would ever thought this as a power generator room? That's more like a piece of art!

My girls are obsessed with the brand NUM, a local brand which, sadly, you can't find any outlet in Malaysia. Look what the logo tells you!

We wanted to visit the Universal Studios Singapore® at first, but according to the online reviews, majority of them thought that the park has lot of kinks to work out yet. Definitely not worth the money - $66 for One Day Weekday Pass (adult); $72 for One Day Weekend Pass (adult). It is a small park, with a lot of rides cater to young kids. Nevertheless, it has a few (and I really mean it, A FEW) major attractions:

i) Revenge of the Mummy - an indoor Egyptian-themed (dark-ride) roller coaster, which brings you to an unknown journey with plenty of surprising falls, twists and turns.

ii) Battlestar Galactica - the "duelling" twin roller coaster, divided into Human side & Cylon Side. This is also the main factor that attracts my heart longing for this! However it is currently down for maintenance and inspection, soon after it was opened due to a technical glitch. Funny.

iii) Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure - a river rapids ride through the Jurassic Park experience. You can be soaked wet, beware.

And so, we went to Sentosa instead. It has more entertainment to offer I guess, plus it's a classic tourist attraction, things rarely go wrong there. To get to Sentosa island, proceed to the 3rd floor of VivoCity, board on to the Sentosa Express at S$3 (train fare is limited to single to-and-fro access only). Alternatively, you may follow the signs to the HarbourFront Bus interchange, hop onto the orange Sentosa bus at S$2.

The Merlion.
This is the gigantic replica of Singapore's iconic symbol located at the Merlion Park, near Marina Bay. This one is good enough for capturing the best moment in Singapore. The only difference is, this half-lion, half fish replica doesn't spray water.

Say hi to squirrel!

Sentosa is having a package promotion, either Choice of Fun (S$36.90) or Choice of Thrill (S$46.90). (I'm not sure about the validity period of this promotion, though). If you would like to challenge your fear and limit, opt for Choice of Thrill. The choice of attractions is inviting, we had a hard time of deciding which to choose.

Our choices were:
  • ParaJump @ MegaZip Adventure Park
  • MegaZip @ MegaZip Adventure Park
  • Sentosa Luge ride & Skyride
Note: The pictures of "Choice of Thrill" are still in the process of uploading. So stay tuned!

For ParaJump, you get to simulate a "freefall" jump, more like a preliminary level of bungee jump. (Not really freefall though, since the jump was controlled by a clockwork and you don't experience a total freefall). The platform was about 15m high (approx. 5 storeys high).

When you're about to enter the platform, you would have the tendency to hold on to the gate behind, but the instructor would shout "HANDS OFF!". And oh, they won't push you off the platform, but I guess if you're a doubtful person or experience difficulties of jumping off, they might give you a "helping hand". The feeling of the "freefall" jump was marvelous! It takes real guts to jump off! Apparently I couldn't scream my lungs out, I just couldn't.

The MegaZip ride brings you to the white sands of Fox Finish island, and walking along the bridge you'll be back to Siloso beach to collect your belongings. All your belongings have to be passed to the staff at MegaZip Adventure Park, and will be sent to Siloso beach checkpoint.

Pretty late to get onto the Skyride, but that also means you don't get to complain about sizzling hot sun. The view is still stunning! Seems like Singapore has a busy port.

The Sentosa Luge! The ride is not engined or powered, it's all about the gravity, the acceleration and the braking. Still, you have to control the car, just like driving. Oh, by the way, choose Dragon Trail. When you ride along the track you'll eventually reach an intersection point, one leading to the one I mentioned, and another leading to Forest Trail. I don't know about the Forest Trail since I only get to try one Luge ride. Dragon Trail is brand new, said to be "more elevated and exciting, with tighter corners and numerous turns". Check this out!

They are right about it. Riding along the track at night was fun since the track will be illuminated with special night lighting. It's absolutely a must-try attraction!

Get your ticket to enjoy Songs of the Sea @ S$10.00. It's another classic show that's staged in Sentosa, coloured with water jets, lasers effect, and had been improved by the addition of flame bursts and fireworks. I remember back in 2002 they didn't have fireworks, did they?

It's illegal to have a "sneak-peek" of the show, but everyone does that! Oh well~ Anyway it's located at the top of the "Taj Mahal" building. *zip my mouth*

Had my dinner at Food Republic @ VivoCity.

Thumbs up for this! I heard there's one branch in Pavilion's Food Republic. Tell me if you tried it before.
